How To Maintain Lawn Health

The grass in your yard takes up the majority of your landscaping design. However, the vast presence of your grass also means it withstands a great deal of general wear and tear from use, animals, and the weather. Poor grass health can leave your yard looking patchy, browning, and unappealing, which can make the entire exterior of your house look poorly. Fortunately, there are a number of simple things that you can do to improve the overall health and appearance of your lawn's grass.

Remove Objects

The easiest thing that you can do to ensure your grass stays in good health is to make sure you remove all foreign objects that are sitting on your lawn. This includes toys, garden tools, patio furniture, and anything else which may block sunlight and exert pressure on the surface of your lawn. Keeping these items relegated to hard surfaces in your yard, like driveways, decks, and patios, can help keep your grass in good condition.

Leave the Clippings

Another simple way to make sure that your lawn stays in good health is to leave the grass clippings on your lawn after you mow it. While this may look a little disorganized and messy in the short term, these clippings will break down and provide additional nutrients to the soil in the long term, ensuring better growth and healthier grass. Plus, leaving the clippings on your lawn will also reduce the amount of maintenance that you will have to do on your lawn.

Proper Cutting

In a similar vein to the above point, you should make an effort to develop a standard lawn-cutting schedule. This will ensure that your grass will not get the chance to grow rampantly, but it will also ensure that the grass has enough time to grow itself out, without getting cut too short. Every ten days or two weeks is a good rule of thumb, though you should make adjustments based on how fast your grass grows, depending on your climate.

Watering Schedules

Finally, you should also make an effort to develop a regular watering schedule for your lawn. Installing timers on your sprinkler system is a good, low-maintenance way to ensure regular watering; you can even get variants with rain sensors that will adjust how long your sprinklers run, depending on your weekly rainfall. These models allow you to save water, while still maintaining the health of your grass.
