What You Can Do About Weeds?

Every garden just simply loves summer. Unfortunately, your vegetables and herbs are not the only things that enjoy the summer season. Garden invaders such as clover, crabgrass, and sorrel enjoy it too.

It is a fact that it can sometimes be hard to tell the difference between weeds and healthy, highly useful plants. Even though a lot of people think that weeds are not good for their gardens because they take up valuable nutrients and water, it is actually a little bit more difficult to define the specific difference between a regular plant and a weed. In general, weeds are those plants that landscapers believe are annoying and unwelcome.

So, how to get rid of weeds organically? The following are some tips that can help you do this the right way.

Pull Them Out

This one sounds very simple, right? It certainly does, but if you ask anyone who has ever pulled weeds before about this, they will most likely tell you that it is not always as easy as it seems. Put on a pair of garden gloves and start pulling. In order to have the best chance of successfully pulling a weed out, pull slowly from its base. Another good thing that you can do is remove weeds while they are still relatively young.

Scald Them

When you are boiling pasta or potatoes, you usually just dump the water down the drain, right? Well, the next time you do it, don't just dump the water down the drain, but dump it onto the weeds instead. In order for this method to work, the water needs to be boiling or at least very hot. Keep your pets and children away, and watch your hands and feet.

Salt Them

You need to be careful with this method, and you should only apply it to areas where you don't care about anything ever growing again. Take some salt and sprinkle it between cracks in the sidewalk, along the edges of your lawn or in garden pathways. This is a very effective method of killing weeds. But be careful, though, because the soil barren can cause some damage to the concrete. You can use any kind of salt for this, but the best option would be to use some rock salt. If you have some rock salt now, that's great, but if you don't, you can usually get some great deals at the end of the winter season.

Contain Them

If you can't prevent a weed from ever growing in your yard, you can at least try to keep them out of your most beautiful garden areas. Consider putting up retaining walls to confine your gardens. Then, focus specifically on doing a thorough job with your weed prevention efforts in these areas. Putting flowers and other special plants in specialized retaining wall containers is a great way to keep them from being affected by weeds, lawn diseases, and other no-good lawn inhabitants. Companies like Retaining Walls Inc can help with this.
